Green Tsetlin Redefining Efficiency in Tsetlin Machine Frameworks

Glimsdal, Sondre, Østby, Sebastian, Brambo, Tobias M., Vinje, Eirik M.

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Green Tsetlin (GT) is a Tsetlin Machine (TM) framework developed to solve real-world problems using TMs. Several frameworks already exist that provide access to TM implementations. However, these either lack features or have a research-first focus. GT is an easy-to-use framework that aims to lower the complexity and provide a production-ready TM implementation that is great for experienced practitioners and beginners. To this end, GT establishes a clear separation between training and inference. A C++ backend with a Python interface provides competitive training and inference performance, with the option of running in pure Python. It also integrates support for critical components such as exporting trained models, hyper-parameter search, and cross-validation out-of-the-box.

Pull US AI Research Out of China

#artificialintelligence

This piece was updated Aug. 11 to add information from Google. Recently, the Biden administration and a host of allies called out China for its massive Microsoft Exchange hack (among others), and threatened strengthened cyber defense measures and continued exposure of the PRC's malicious cyber activity. But despite a lot of hard talk about securing America's cyber defenses, action is wanting, and the government has failed to address a glaring boon to the PRC's cyber capabilities: our own companies' AI research centers in China. Housing the AI research labs of America's cutting-edge tech companies in authoritarian China was never a good idea. But given that the Chinese government uses foreign tech companies to help find and exploit security vulnerabilities, and that it is claiming ever more control over tech companies' operations and data, it looks more objectionable than ever. AI is an increasingly crucial element of cyber security and hacking, and Xi Jinping's China has demonstrated time and time again that China's high-tech sector serves the CCP, which sees AI technology in particular as a core tool of its future autocratic rule.

Pacific Northwest National Lab plays role in federally funded AI research center

#artificialintelligence

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is joining forces with two other research powerhouses to pioneer a new $5.5 million research center created by the U.S. Department of Energy to focus on the biggest challenges in artificial intelligence. The Center for Artificial Intelligence-Focused Architectures and Algorithms, or ARIAA, will promote collaborative projects for scientists at PNNL in Richland, Wash., at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, and at Georgia Tech. PNNL and Sandia are part of the Energy Department's network of research labs. ARIAA will be headed by Roberto Gioiosa, a senior research scientist at PNNL. As center director, he'll be in charge of ARIAA's overall vision, strategy and research direction.

Google opens a new AI research center in Bangalore, India

#artificialintelligence

At its annual Google for India event in the capital of New Delhi today, the search giant announced it's opening an AI research center in Bangalore, led by scientist Dr. Manish Gupta, an ACM Fellow and Infosys Foundation Chair Professor at IIIT Bangalore. The center, called Google Research India, will focus on tools that can be used by government and private entities. The company wants to work with local talent in the field of machine learning, computer vision, languages, speech, systems, and several other related areas. Along with Gupta, Google has appointed Professor Milind Tambe from Harvard University as a director of AI for social good. The company said one set of people working at the center will focus on fundamental AI research by publishing papers and building a strong community in the country, while another group will work on big problems in fields like healthcare, and, education, and also apply their ideas to "make apps and services used by billions of people more helpful."

Criteo unveils €20m AI research center to further machine learning in adtech

#artificialintelligence

France-based adtech outfit Criteo has announced the launch of a €20m three-year project to further research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) that will see it work with clients and partners alike to further the use of machine learning in the advertising vertical. Dubbed Criteo AI Lab, the project will see it attempt to build "deep models that are interpretable, transparent and user-centric" then use these insights to form "industry standards for performance measurement and best practice", with the subsequent learnings to be made available to the entire industry. Criteo claims the project will also explore models for the responsible use of data – an increasingly high priority for advertisers as demonstrated by the Cambridge Analytica affair, as well as the introduction of General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) in the EU – with the company asserting the scheme will also help bridge theory and practice. Additionally, the adtech company claimed it is preparing a significant recruitment drive to man the project which is geared towards establishing Paris as a regional hub for AI research. JB Rudelle, Criteo, chief executive officer, said the lab was indicative of the company's efforts to establish the French capital as an epicenter for European adtech, as well as lead the industry conversation around machine learning.
